The Sum of Us

We started out strong–both of us thinking this could be it–but time drew us back to our senses. Each day we would try to get back there, but it was never the same. That one lie set everything in a new light. It’s behind us now, but can’t be undone.

So instead of moving forward, we stepped back into friendship. Almost immediately we started to like each other more within those familiar bounds. You saw that as a sign and asked to restart. Though I had imagined I’d say yes when friends asked me before, your question was answered with another no.

I can’t be anything more.

Short Answers

People ask me how I’m doing and I want to tell them the truth, but I’m learning that very few want to hear about the pains of last night or the contemplations of this morning.

So I’ll try to come up with a small fact about my week to satiate your need to ask, but your apathy to know.

Questions Unheard

So many choices to make. So many things I’m still unsure of. I keep asking people for advice and help, yet every time — their responses never answer and — empty I walk away.

Because I’m asking them for answers to questions You’ve never let them hear.

They know my words, but my question has been veiled. You keep it from them knowing an answer weighs more depending on the source. You want to be both my Answerer and my Answer.

“So the Lord said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes the mute, the deaf, the seeing, or the blind? Have not I, the Lord?” – Exodus 4:11 NKJV

“They have ears, but they do not hear..” (speaking of idols) – Psalm 135:17 NKJV

“To You I will cry, O Lord my Rock: Do not be silent to me, Lest, if You are silent to me, I become like those who go down to the pit.”- Psalm 28:1 NKJV
